Viticulture & Vinification: Each lot was lightly whole cluster
pressed, allowed to settle for a day and then placed into French oak
barrels (33% new) where it spontaneously fermented using all native
yeasts. The wine is aged sur-lie for 10 months. The barrels are stirred
twice a month to round out the wine and build texture.
About the winery…
Former investment bankers, Justin & Deborah Baldwin founded Justin Vineyards & Winery in 1981, purchasing 160
acres of land in the beautiful hills 15 miles west of Paso Robles.
Justin was a pioneer, inspiring distinguished estates Tablas Creek, L’Aventure, Daou & others to follow. In 2011,
Stewart & Lynda Resnick (POM Wonderful, FIJI Water) acquired the winery, and have made significant investment
in additional vineyard resources. Fred Holloway (Lokoya, Cardinale, Verité) has been winemaker since 2003, and in
2012 Scott Shirley (formerly Opus One, Hess Collection) became winemaker, as Fred took overall responsibility for
vineyards and winemaking.
Tucked away at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains in the Sonoma Valley, Landmark Vineyards epitomizes the
rustic grace and beauty of Sonoma County. Landmark has been producing premium, handcrafted wines since 1974.
The winery’s history is rooted in agriculture — its founder, Damaris Deere Ford, is the great-great-granddaughter of
John Deere, inventor of the first steel plow. Damaris turned her focus to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the early ‘90s
— 1991 was the first vintage of ‘Overlook’ Chardonnay, which continues to be their flagship wine. In 1993 Landmark
deepened their commitment to Chardonnay by hiring world-renown enologist Helen Turley (no longer with the
winery), which led to Landmark’s signature style: whole-cluster pressed grapes, native yeast fermentation and barrel
aging in French oak.
Tasting notes: On the nose, the wine features notes of Meyer lemon
tarte, marzipan, toasted almonds, Asian pear, honeysuckle and a hint of
Tahitian vanilla. On the palate, notes of apricot, clover honey and toast
are in perfect balance with zippy acidity and bright minerality.
