Appellation: California
Varieties: Petite Sirah
Tasting notes: Vivid purple in colour with aromas of blackberry and boysenberry. Caramel and toffee are evident in the bouquet as well as chocolate and oak. Rich, soft, and creamy texture of mocha with ripe black fruit flavours on the palate. The finish is mouth watering and lengthily.
Accolades…
89 Points ‘Best Buy’- In color, this wine is virtually black, with a deep-red rim, while aromas are concentrated and dense. Flavors recall blackberry syrup, yet are nicely dry. Despite its full body and thick coating of tannins, the wine’s texture feels polished and all the elements are in balance.- Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast- March 2016.
About the winery…
By now, most of you have heard of McManis. The wines have an extremely devoted following due to their crowd-pleasing style and unparalleled value. The family has been farming in California’s Central Valley since 1938. When we started working with Jamie & Ron McManis in early 2002, they had just released the first vintage of their eponymous wine — fewer than 10,000 cases of 2000 vintage, from estate and purchased fruit. We were knocked out by the value and the appealing style of their wines. Since then, McManis has taken on a life of its own, growing to more than 2600 acres of estate vineyards (River Junction, Borden Ranch, Clements Hill and Jahant appellations) and over 300,000 cases annual production.
Until the late 1990s McManis sold their grapes to other wineries. They continue to supply grapes and finished or bulk wines to a number of high profile Napa and Sonoma wineries. This winery-to winery business remains the largest part of the picture for McManis. However, what’s most satisfying for Ron and Jamie McManis is putting their own name on the labels, and they set a very high standard for the quality and value of these wines. Winemaker Mike Robustelli has been with McManis since the 1999 harvest. Tanya and Justin McManis, and Tanya’s husband Dirk, have joined their parents in the winery and vineyard business, becoming the fifth generation to farm this land. McManis vineyards are Certified Sustainable through the Lodi Rules Program, among the most stringent in California. As the San Francisco Chronicle says, “McManis makes honest, affordable table wines that outperform the competition.”
